⚠ HSE rebooted EL certificate enforcement audits in 2024

Audit your business cover in 60 seconds.

Every UK business carries 3–6 insurance touchpoints across the year — bought at different times, from different brokers, often with the wrong cover for what the business does now. insurance.law audits every line, manages every renewal, and routes placements through a regulated broker. The three traps

Why businesses end up uninsured without realising

HSE rebooted EL audits in 2024. Contracting tenders ask for cover certificates on the spot. These are the three patterns we see weekly.

Trap 01
Forgotten cover gaps
You hired your first employee 8 months ago but never bought EL. Or grew to handle customer data without cyber. The gap surfaces only at claim time — which is too late, and tens of thousands of pounds late.
Trap 02
Lapsed renewals
Three policies. Three insurers. Three renewal dates. One gets missed. The business is uninsured for three weeks until someone notices. Worst case: a claim falls in that window.
Trap 03
Certificate chaos
Your EL certificate is in a filing cabinet — or your inbox from 2022. HSE asks for it, you can't find it, £1,000 fine. A contracting tender asks for proof of cover and you have 24 hours to find it.

FAQ

The questions everyone asks

Are you an insurance broker?
No. insurance.law is a technology platform. The regulated activity — placing policies, giving suitability advice — is conducted by Supreme Capital Limited, an FCA Authorised firm / Appointed Representative. We charge a SaaS fee for the audit, vault, calendar and quote engine. Supreme Capital earns commission on the policies it places. It's the same architectural pattern as Tide Insurance / Anorak.
Are the quotes you show me binding?
No. All quotes presented on insurance.law are indicative — they're estimates from the panel insurers' APIs based on the information you've entered. When you choose to place cover, the customer mandate transfers to Supreme Capital, which conducts the regulated sale and provides the binding final quote. Indicative quotes are typically within 15% of final, but we always disclose this margin.
Will my broker get cut out?
If you have an existing broker you're happy with, keep them — we'll still audit your cover, manage your certificate vault, and alert you to renewal dates. The quote engine is opt-in. Many customers use insurance.law alongside their existing broker for the audit and admin, and use their broker for placement.
What if my insurer isn't on your panel?
You can still upload your policy and certificate. Our audit reads policy schedules from any UK insurer — we just can't issue fresh quotes from insurers outside our panel. At launch the panel is Hiscox + AXA + Aviva. Expanding to 6 by end of Year 1.
Is the £19/mo audit useful if I never plan to switch insurer?
Often, yes. The most common audit findings aren't "your insurer is wrong" — they're "you've grown and your cover hasn't" (cover limit too low for current contracts) or "you've taken on new exposure that's uninsured" (no cyber when you started handling customer data). Even if you stay with your existing insurer, the audit gives you specific things to ask them.

Stop hoping your cover is enough.

Run the 60-second audit. If you're clear, brilliant. If you're not, fix it before the claim arrives.
